On November 18th 2019 members met at the Town Hall for the final afternoon meeting of the year. One can hardly believe how quickly the time has flown by. Our speaker was Peter Mckeon a member of the Shropshire Wildlife Trust. Peter gave a wonderful talk with slides on wildlife and conservation projects in our local area. Peter spoke about Whixall, Bettisfield and Wem Mosses and the importance of such special scientific interest sites. These incredible nature reserves whose ongoing conservation and preservation must be of utmost importance, raising awareness to us all.

Peter also spoke of how to encourage wildlife into our gardens and how we should not be too tidy. Everyone scored well!

A vote of thanks was given to Peter by Barbara O’Donnell.

Homemade Mince Pies and Homemade Biscuits were served and made by Val Thomson and Mavis Griffiths.

December 2nd, 12.30pm will be our Christmas Meal at the Black Lion where I look forward to seeing you all.

I would like to thank all the Committee Members for their dedicated and hard work in making Mothers’ Union so special and all our members for their wonderful ongoing support.

Wishing you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas.

Yours with love,

Ann

Our Summer meeting was held on Monday July 15th, 2pm in the Town Hall. The Vicar, The Rev'd Philip Edge led the prayers, sadly for the last time as he is leaving in September.

We had a special afternoon tea done by the committee. Our Deanery Leaders Mrs Rosemary Horton was present.

The tables were laid with very pretty eclectic china on hand embroidered tablecloths. Pots of sweet peas and delicate greenery straight from the garden were done by myself and Donna.

The waitresses Mary, Phyllis, Donna and Kath wore lace edge white aprons, looking very professional as did the ladies in the kitchen, Joyce, Phyllis and Heather laying our the food and making the tea and coffee.

The food was absolutely first class, lovely finger sandwiches and crisps, scones with strawberries an cream, melt in the mouth meringues, lemon cake and sponge cake etc, all home made by our own members. We were entertained by our member Mrs Mavis Griffiths and our guest, Beryl Gilbert, who both did monologues—Mavis "The Magna Charter" and Beryl "Albert and the Lion".

Kath had a bring and buy stall and raised £50 for Mothers' Union funds.

We all had a very happy an enjoyable fun afternoon.

Our Autumn outing on Monday September 16th will be a visit to St Chads Church, Hanmer and lunch at the Hanmer Arms, we meet at 11 .45am at Cross Street Carpark and arrive at the Hanmer Arms for lunch as 12.30pm. At 2pm the Rev. Clive Hughes will give a guided tour and talk on the Church of St. Chad, Hanmer. Please let us know if you are coming so that we can arrange transport and lunch.

Yours with love,

Ann

The Branch meeting, the last one of 2018 (how the time flies) was held on Monday November 19th, 2pm at the Town Hall. Mrs Mary Goulbourne was welcomed onto our committee along with Mrs Mavis Griffiths. The speaker was one of our own members

Barbara O'Donovan who spoke about "My trip of a lifetime". Barbara told us of her amazing time in Africa in a small village 95 miles from anywhere staying with the Catholic Priest who, along with others, helped to build a school, meeting house, houses etc. Barbara also showed a video of her trip from start to finish including wild animals, it all looked absolutely idyllic. Heather Wright and Joyce Feeney served delicious home made cakes and mince pies, plus tea and coffee

I carried our old more appropriate Mothers' Union banner at the 100th Anniversary Remembrance Service at Church, the old banner given in 1937 by Adelaide Mary Ashton, had not been used since we had the new one in the late 1970s. Mothers should be recognised and remembered as they gave their sons for the Country.

Our final meeting is the Christmas Party on December 3rd at The Boathouse.

We have yet again had a very packed and enjoyable year. I would like to thank the Committee for all their hard work in making this happen and also thank the Reverend Phillip Edge for his support of the Mothers' Union.

I wish you all a very peaceful and blessed Christmas with lots of joy and look forward to seeing you at the many Christmas Services at Church, see the magazine for details

Ann
