The start of our Mothers' Union 2017 year began on the 16th January 2pm at the Town Hall. A presentation "Leap of Faith" was given by Jeremy Stretton, a video and pictures were shown by Jeremy of his amazing Bungee Jump from a high crane at Tatton Park. Jeremy told of the history of Bungee Jumping which originated at two main centres, Mexico with the Aztecs and at Nuvalu in the South Pacific and dated back to 6BC. £800 in sponsorship was raised for Church funds. A short video was also shown with Mr William Parker and Jeremy going down a Zip Wire in North Wales also raising money for Church funds. It was all exciting stuff; very daring and brave of both of them. A vote of thanks was given by Mrs Kath Meeks, teas were served by Mrs Connie Mason and Mrs Heather Wright.

February 9th is the Mothers' Union 'Wave of Prayer". This will be held from 14.40 to 15.00 (pm) in St. John's Room or in your own home if you cannot get to Church. The wave of prayer is a continuous expression of our commitment in prayer to each other, which runs throughout the year and encompasses all the places in which we are represented. This year we pray especially for KARNATAKA - India, ANKOLE - Uganda, LAGOS - West Nigeria and here at home - LICHFIELD.

Our next meeting on February 20th will be our AGM held at the Town Hall 1.45pm followed with a talk "Heron Watch" by Edward Bevan.

Yours with love,

Ann

THE MOTHERS' UNION PRAYER

Loving Lord, we thank you for your love so freely given to us all. We pray for families around the world. Bless the work of the Mothers' Union as we seek to share your love through the encouragement strengthening and support of marriage and family life. Empowered by your spirit, may we be united in prayer and worship, and in love and service, reach out as your hands across the world. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Prayer of thanks for God's light

Father of all creation,
Thank you for signs of life and light, even in the dark and sometimes difficult days of winter. Thank you for Jesus' victory over darkness and death - and for the assurance that, if we put our trust in Him - nothing can ever separate us from you.
Help us to hold onto the hope you have given us and to walk on with Jesus as our guiding light. And may His light attract others who don't yet know Him and whom the darkness threatens to overwhelm.
Shine on us, Lord, that we may reflect your light and receive your peace.
In Jesus's name.
Amen.

On November 16th the new Bishop of Lichfield Michael Ipgrave came to the Town Hall to meet members of our Mothers' Union Deanery, i.e. —Members of Welshampton, Welsh Frankton and Ellesmere. We had afternoon tea including delicious scones, jam and clotted cream from Valerie's tea shop. It was a very informal meeting with Bishop Michael chatting to each of us to hear about Mothers' Union and what we achieve here in our deanery. Our deanery leader Mrs Rosemary Horton thanked Bishop Michael for coming to Ellesmere to meet our Branches, making this a very special afternoon and part of our 140 years celebration of Mothers' Union Movement.

Our afternoon meeting on November 21st was held at the Town Hall at 2pm. The speaker was the Rev. Charles Ruxton who led an Interesting discussion on "Prayer" and why it is so important. Encouraged by Rev. Ruxton we spoke of our many different views on prayer. What is prayer? How to pray, and what prayer meant to us. A vote of thanks was given by Mrs Meg Wilkes and teas were served by Mrs Joyce Richardson and Mrs Connie Mason.

The Christmas meal will be on December 5th at the Boathouse 12.30 for 1pm. Our annual subscription for 2017 will be £22.50 payable on 1st January 2017.

The AGM was held prior to our February meeting at 2pm, where reports by the Secretary, Mrs Valerie Thomson, the Treasurer, Mrs Joyce Richardson and the Branch Leader, Mrs Ann Harris were read out.

From February 2016 Mrs Valerie Thomson has stepped down as Secretary so we now need to fill the post that Valerie has done so excellently for a number of years.

One of our members Mrs Mary Goulbourne has also stepped down from the Committee after many years, Thank you Valerie and Mary for all your hard work. If any members feel that they would like to join the Committee, or to be Secretary please contact me.

Following the AGM a talk "Our Rwanda Link" was given by Ann Harris as a tribute to the late Mothers' Union member, Mary Jones. The Committee dressed in bright coloured material that had come from Rwanda and one member wore a wedding dress. I talked of how from our Mothers' Union branch here in Ellesmere we came to have a Mothers' Union "Link" in Rwanda in Kigali the capital and Kilamaruzi from 1977 until the late 1990's. It all came about when Mary Jones' daughter married John who's grandparents and parents were missionaries in Rwanda. Johns mother was a member of Mothers' Union in Kigali and Kilamaruzi and so Mary started to correspond with their Mother's Union members.

Mostly the letters had to be translated in London, but over the years we had a wonderful insight into how life was in Rwanda.

We used to knit, sew, have rummage sales and send parcels of baby clothes, sewing materials etc, all collected and packed in St. Mary's Hall, we even sent Wedding Dresses which the girls used to like to get married in. In return they sent little gifts of basket ware that they had made. I was thanked by Mrs Heather Wright and presented with a lovely plant. Teas were served by Mrs Mary Goulbourne and Mrs Connie Mason.

On Saturday morning 5th March at l0am Mothers' Union will be making posies in Church ready for Mothering Sunday. The posies will be given out along with Mothering Cards by the children at the 10.15am Church service. Any members who would like to come and help or give a donation of flowers would be very welcome.

Our next meeting is a talk by Schools Christian Worker, Ben Mayho "Does Faith have a place in our Schools in the 21st Century"

With love,

Ann
