September 15th was our Mystery Outing. A full coach of members and friends set out from Ellesmere at 11am and arrived at the delightful town of Eccleshall in Staffordshire at 12 pm. On arriving at Holy Trinity Church we had a short service of Mothers' Union afternoon prayers led by our own vicar The Rev. Philip Edge, followed by a lovely lunch in the Church Hall prepared by ladies from the Church. After lunch we had a most interesting guide and talk on the history of Holy Trinity Church, which dates from 1195. Thank you to Mrs Connie Mason for arranging such a memorable outing. The next Mothers' Union afternoon meeting will be on October 20th in the Town Hall at 2pm with a talk by Mr Rodney Upton "The Update of the Church Bells".

Evening Mothers' Union Group (eMUs)

On September 24th we had a fascinating talk by Mrs Estelle Parker about a family from our church who lived 600 years ago. A girl getting married and giving birth to a Son and all the perils and dangers of Childbirth and the hardships of living such a long time ago in Ellesmere. The family came to St. mary's, the son was a clever little boy who learned not only to read but to write. When he eventually died he was buried in the floor of St. Anne's Chapel, where his tombstone remains today.

The next evening meeting is on October 22nd at 7.30pm in St. John's Room with a Mothers' Union film on Homes.

Afternoon M.U. Group

At the March meeting Mrs Ann Harris, Branch Leader gave an interesting and amusing talk on the “History of Ellesmere Mothers’ Union” starting in 1906.  The talk was taken from snippets from old record books that Mrs Mary Jones had given to her.  Sadly, the  Temperance Rooms, Trimpley Hall and St. Mary’s Hall have all passed into history and The Old Vicarage, where afternoon teas, garden parties and fetes were held—Sold !, but in spite of all that the Mothers’ Union is still very much alive and thriving.  Many of the old scrap books were displayed and tea and delicious dainty little cakes made by Kath, Val and Phyllis were served.  The vote of thanks and a lovely basket of flowers were given to Ann by Mrs Kath Meeks.  The next afternoon meeting in the Town Hall at 2pm will be a talk on "Adult Literacy" by the Rev. Karen Davies.

January 2014

A message from our new Branch Leader, Ann Harris

I, Ann Harris have been elected as the new Branch Leader of Mothers' Union, Ellesmere and will take up my position as from January 2014.

I will be commissioned at the Family Service on January 19th at St. Mary's by the Vicar Rev. Philip Edge and would really appreciate members to come and support me on this occasion.

It will be a hard task to follow all the hard work of our late branch leader, Jo and the splendid job she did as Leader, but with your support and the excellent committee that we have, I will do my best.

Yours in love and fellowship,

Ann

Kath Meeks

We did not have a meeting in December, but we did have our Christmas Party at the Black Lion. We had an enjoyable meal, rounded off by singing a few Christmas Carols. It was nice to see members and friends who support our events. We hope you enjoyed it, and thanks were given to Connie Mason by Ann for organising this event. We would like to thank all who helped make Christingles, its good to have the help of St. Mary's Club.

The subscriptions for next year will be £19 and it would be helpful if this could be paid at the January meeting, as we have to pay all subscriptions over to the diocese before the end of February. The next afternoon meeting will be on January 20th at 2.00pm at the Town Hall, when the speaker will be the Rev. Stephen Harrop on his time as a Prison Chaplain.

Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year

Yours in fellowship,

Kath Meeks
