S. Mary's Church News May 2014

Work continues to improve the appearance of the Churchyard and we have now removed/relocated standard roses from along the main path and created a border on the right of the main path which has been planted with Cat Nip and gravelled. The largest of the old wooden headstocks from the bells is being cleaned and will be placed behind the new border with the memorial name plates taken from those roses which were removed.

Garden Trail Sunday 8th June 2014

There will be a Garden Trail from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday 8th June. Nine gardens within walking distance of the church will be open for visitors with teas  available at some of the gardens. There will also be a plant stall. Tickets priced at £4 will allow entry to all of the gardens and we are very grateful to all those who have offered to open their gardens for everyone to enjoy.

Annual Parish Lunch

Once again,  Elis and Alison Hughes have very kindly agreed to host the parish lunch which will take place on Sunday 22nd June at their home Haughton Farm, off Cae Goody Lane starting at 12.30.

Tickets priced at £10 will soon be available from Ann Harris and will include Rodney Stokes' Roast beef, new potatoes, salads and sweets.

This is always a very popular event and tickets are certain to be in great demand.

We will also be asking for volunteers to provide salads and sweets and guests are reminded to bring a pound along with them on the day for a game of heads and tails!

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting 8th April 7.30pm

Every member of our church Electoral Roll should come to this meeting to hear the work of our church and to elect the Church Wardens, Deanery Synod Representatives and PCC Members. The church’s attempt at democracy!

The Tower Abseil

The Tower Abseil which took place on 22nd and 23rd March was a great success. This indoor abseil down the tower over the weekend and was made possible due to the absence of the Bells in the Bell Tower and the Initiative of the Digby family. The abseil was combined with a Bring and share lunch after the 10.15am service which was enthusiastically received.

Update on The Bells

The abseil went ahead on the weekend of the 22nd March because the trapdoor in the bell ringing chamber has been opened again to receive the refurbished bells which are due to return to Ellesmere on 24th. I have had several comments from local residents saying how they have missed the bells during their absence.

Hotpot Supper and Quiz

The Hotpot supper and quiz was held on Friday 14th March and attracted a record attendance. A wholesome ninety five portions of Rodney Stokes' excellent Hotpot were served, accompanied by new potatoes and bread, followed by apple pie and cream provided by a number of members of the church. Twenty three teams then competed in the quiz set for the first time this year by Jenny Spurdens. This involved a starter round of famous faces and logo identification followed by six rounds of questions on topics including general knowledge, spices and the Winter Olympics. From a total possible score of 50 points, one team secured victory with 37 points narrowly beating a number of other teams by only one or two points. Many thanks to everyone involved in providing food and helping on the evening which was enjoyed by all and which raised over £700 for church funds.

Lent Lunches

Lent Lunches in aid of the Bishops Lent Appeal continue each Friday at 12.30 in S. John's room.

Honorary Freewoman for 2013

The Town Council were delighted to award Mrs Ann Harris as the Town's Honorary Freewoman for 2013 recognising the hard work that she carries out for the Virgin Church of St. Mary's, Ellesmere Cemetery and also for the town.

Some redecoration has been completed inside the church with some water damaged walls being repainted as well as the kitchen and toilet. there are plans for a major spring clean of the church and a new vacuum cleaner is to be purchased using some of the funds from the 200 club!

Storm Damage

The recent storms brought down a large amount of debris from the trees in the churchyard, but fortunately no whole trees were lost. The programme of clearance continues. A number of the standard roses by the main path, many of which are dead, are being removed and will be replaced by a lavender border. The memorial plaques on the roses are being kept and cleaned and the plan is to mount them on one of the large redundant headstocks from the bells which will then be placed behind the new border.
