January 2012

Corporate Communion Sunday, 1st January at 10.15 am

We did not have a meeting in December, but we did have our Christmas Party on Monday, 12 December at The Black Lion. After an enjoyable meal, the evening was rounded off with a few Christmas poems. It was nice that some members from both the afternoon and evening groups were able to come and, as always, we were glad to welcome the loyal friends who support our events. I hope that everyone enjoyed the evening as much as I did and I would like to thank Connie Mason for all her hard work as the main organiser of this very pleasant occasion.

The subscription for next year will be £ 18 and it would be helpful if this could be paid at the January meeting. Mothers' Union does such important work both here and overseas and I hope that this rather large increase in the subscription will not put members off from joining this year.

Afternoon MU Group

The first afternoon meeting of the new year will be on 16 January at 2.00 pm at the Town Hall when Rodney Upton will be giving a talk on the history of St Mary's bells.

The first evening meeting of the new year will be on Thursday, 19 January at 7.30 pm in St John's Room when Rosemary Walker, a Mothers' Union trustee and former Diocesan President, will talking about the MU Family Life Programme.

Yours in love and fellowship.

December 2011

Corporate Communion Sunday, 4th December at 10.15 am

Our programme for next year will be available shortly and this will include details of both afternoon meetings and evening meetings. The Subscription for next year will be £18. While this is rather a big increase, I am sure members will realise that costs have also increased greatly and will want to continue to support the valuable and important work that Mothers' Union does both here and overseas.

Neither the afternoon nor the evening group have a meeting in December, but we do have our Christmas Party on Monday 12 December at the Black Lion at 6.30 for 7.00pm

Afternoon MU Group

The speaker at our November meeting was Mavis Griffiths who gave an amusing and entertaining talk sharing her experiences when she was a young vicar's wife and led the Mothers' Union in her husband's parish.

The first meeting of the New Year will be on 16 January at 2.00pm at the Town Hall when Rodney Upton will be giving a talk on the history of St. Mary's bells.

We did not have a speaker at our November meeting but had great fun helping to complete Rose's imaginative project on MU overseas. It was good to have the time to appreciated all the good work Mothers' Union does around the world.

The first meeting of the New Year will be on Thursday. 19 January at 7.30pm in St. John's Room when Rosemary Walker. a Mothers' Union trustee and former Diocesan President, will talk about the MU Family Life Programme.

October 2011

Corporate Communion Sunday, 2nd October at 10.15 am

Once again we have been asked to run the cake stall at the Autumn Market on 15 October. Any offers of cakes and help on the day will be very welcome. It would be great to be able match, or even to beat, last year's magnificent total of £170.

Afternoon MU Group

We did not have a meeting in September, but we did have our mystery outing on 19 September, which went to Hawarden. After an excellent lunch in the tithe barn, which is now used as the church hall, we visited the church of St Deniel where we had a short service of prayers followed by a lively and entertaining talk on the history of the church. We had a short time to look round the church and some intrepid members of our party climbed the tower before our trip was completed by a scenic ride through the Welsh countryside. Thanks to Connie for organising yet another successful and enjoyable trip.

Our next meeting is on 17 October at 2.00 pm at the Town Hall when we will be having a speaker from the British Legion.

Ellesmere eMU's

The speaker at our September meeting was Muriel Rayner from Operation Christmas Child. We did not have a meeting in August and our next meeting will be on Thursday, 15 September at 7.30 pm in St John's Room. I am hoping to have a speaker from Operation Christmas Child, but this has not been confirmed yet.

Yours in love and fellowship.

November 2011

Corporate Communion Sunday, 6th November at 10.15 am

Once again we had the task of running the cake stall at the Autumn Market. We had lots of beautiful cakes for sale and raised £175 for church funds (slightly more than last year.) Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this excellent result.

Our Christmas party this year will be on the evening of Monday, 12 December at the Black Lion. This consists of 2-course meal, plus coffee, for a price of £11 (with £1 discount for MU members). As always, non-members will be very welcome.

Afternoon MU Group

The speakers at our October meeting were Richard Steer and Ian Williams from the Royal British Legion who gave a very enlightening and informative talk, which gave a good insight into the workings of the British Legion.

Our next meeting is on 21 November at 2.00 pm at the Town Hall when we will be having a talk by Mavis Griffiths.

Ellesmere eMU's

The speaker at our October meeting was Estelle Parker who gave the second instalment of her fascinating talk on the history of St Mary's church and prominent local families.

The next meeting will be on Thursday, 17 November at 7.30 pm in St John's Room when Rose will be continuing her project on overseas branches.

Yours in love and fellowship.

September 2011

Corporate Communion Sunday, 4th September at 10.15 am

Afternoon MU Group

We did not have a meeting in July, but we had our summer trip, which this year was to the Flower Festival at Claverley. Although the weather forecast for the day was not particularly good, we managed to stay dry for most of our visit. I think everyone would agree that the floral arrangements in the church were stunning. I would like to thank Connie Mason for all her hard work in arranging this successful trip.

On 15 August we had a short thanksgiving service in Church at 2.00 pm. Rosemary Walker, who is a former Diocesan President gave an inspiring talk showing how the work of Mothers Union really changes life for the better for women around the world. The service was followed by afternoon tea in St John's Room, where we had a draw which raised £35 for the Relief Fund, using as prizes some of the lovely items left over from the tombola stall at our coffee morning in May. I would like to thank Iain Anderson, our church organist, for playing for us at our service, and the MU committee who provided the refreshments.

We do not have a meeting in September but we do, of course, have our mystery trip on 19 September. We will be leaving Ellesmere at 11.00 am and returning to Ellesmere at approximately 5.00 pm. The cost for this trip, which includes lunch, is £18 (with a £1 discount for members). For further details please contact Connie Mason or any MU Committee member.

Our next meeting is on 17 October at 2.00 pm at the Town Hall when we will be having a speaker from the British Legion.

For details of evening MU meetings please see "Ellesmere eMUs" below.

Yours in love and fellowship,

Instead of a meeting in July, we visited the Nantwich Flower Festival, where the flower arrangements were truly breathtaking. We then went for a meal together at the Combermere Arms. I hope everyone who went enjoyed the beautiful flowers, the good food and good company as much as I did.

We did not have a meeting in August and our next meeting will be on Thursday, 15th September at 7.30 pm in St. John's Room. I am hoping to have a speaker from Operation Christmas Child, but this has not been confirmed yet.
