April 2012

Corporate Communion Sunday, 1st April at 10.15 am

Several members attended the Women's World Day of Prayer service at the Methodist Church on 2 March. I'm sure those who attended would agree that this was an enjoyable service.

Over 100 posies were made for Mothering Sunday. This was only possible through the generosity of people contributing flowers and greenery and the help given by members in making these.

The Town Hall has been booked for Saturday 28 April for our Coffee Morning. Please put this date in your diary as this is our main fund-raising event of the year.

Afternoon MU Group

At the March meeting it was good to be able to welcome members from Wem, Welsh Frankton and Gobowen Mothers' Union Branches. The speaker was Sue Egerton who gave a talk on the MU Beacon and Marketing. Sue then led us in an exercise on marketing, which was not only useful and interesting, but also gave us an opportunity to work with members from the other branches.

The next afternoon meeting will be on 16 April at 2.00 pm in the Town Hall when Muriel Rayner will be giving a talk about her work in India as part of Voluntary Service Overseas.

At the March Meeting Revd Simon Airey gave a talk on Story-telling in Ministry. Simon displayed his talent for story-telling in 3 stories which were all thought-provoking. I found the story Simon told based on a Bible passage particularly moving - it really brought the story to life in a new way.

The next evening meeting will be on the 19 April at 7.30 pm in St John's Room when we have a change to our published programme. Muriel Rayner is no longer able to join us and Wendy Scott has kindly agreed to step into the breach. Wendy has recently done 2 short periods of missionary one work - one in Uganda and one in Siberia - and will be giving a talk about this.

Yours in love and fellowship.

February 2012

Corporate Communion Sunday, 5th February at 10.15 am

I would like to thank all members who have paid their Mothers' Union subscription for this year (£18), and would ask anyone who has not yet paid to pay these as soon as possible, please.

Afternoon MU Group

The speaker at the January meeting was Rodney Upton who gave a talk on the history of St Mary's bells. It was fascinating to learn about the history of bell making, about the unique nature of British bell-ringing and how the changes are rung.

The next afternoon meeting will be on 20 February at 2.00 pm in the Town Hall when Rob McBride will be giving a talk, illustrated by slides, on Shropshire's ancient trees.

The speaker at the January meeting was Rosemary Walker, a Mothers' Union trustee and former Diocesan President, who gave an illustrated talk about the MU Family Life Programme. It was interesting to learn about the many practical ways in which MU improves the lives of people around the world.

The next meeting will be on the 16 February at 7.30 pm in St John's Room when Revd Rosie Bowers, MU Chaplain for Salop, will be leading a Bible Study related to Women's World Day of Prayer.

Yours in love and fellowship.

December 2011

Corporate Communion Sunday, 4th December at 10.15 am

Our programme for next year will be available shortly and this will include details of both afternoon meetings and evening meetings. The Subscription for next year will be £18. While this is rather a big increase, I am sure members will realise that costs have also increased greatly and will want to continue to support the valuable and important work that Mothers' Union does both here and overseas.

Neither the afternoon nor the evening group have a meeting in December, but we do have our Christmas Party on Monday 12 December at the Black Lion at 6.30 for 7.00pm

Afternoon MU Group

The speaker at our November meeting was Mavis Griffiths who gave an amusing and entertaining talk sharing her experiences when she was a young vicar's wife and led the Mothers' Union in her husband's parish.

The first meeting of the New Year will be on 16 January at 2.00pm at the Town Hall when Rodney Upton will be giving a talk on the history of St. Mary's bells.

We did not have a speaker at our November meeting but had great fun helping to complete Rose's imaginative project on MU overseas. It was good to have the time to appreciated all the good work Mothers' Union does around the world.

The first meeting of the New Year will be on Thursday. 19 January at 7.30pm in St. John's Room when Rosemary Walker. a Mothers' Union trustee and former Diocesan President, will talk about the MU Family Life Programme.

Yours in love and fellowship.

January 2012

Corporate Communion Sunday, 1st January at 10.15 am

We did not have a meeting in December, but we did have our Christmas Party on Monday, 12 December at The Black Lion. After an enjoyable meal, the evening was rounded off with a few Christmas poems. It was nice that some members from both the afternoon and evening groups were able to come and, as always, we were glad to welcome the loyal friends who support our events. I hope that everyone enjoyed the evening as much as I did and I would like to thank Connie Mason for all her hard work as the main organiser of this very pleasant occasion.

The subscription for next year will be £ 18 and it would be helpful if this could be paid at the January meeting. Mothers' Union does such important work both here and overseas and I hope that this rather large increase in the subscription will not put members off from joining this year.

Afternoon MU Group

The first afternoon meeting of the new year will be on 16 January at 2.00 pm at the Town Hall when Rodney Upton will be giving a talk on the history of St Mary's bells.

The first evening meeting of the new year will be on Thursday, 19 January at 7.30 pm in St John's Room when Rosemary Walker, a Mothers' Union trustee and former Diocesan President, will talking about the MU Family Life Programme.

November 2011

Corporate Communion Sunday, 6th November at 10.15 am

Once again we had the task of running the cake stall at the Autumn Market. We had lots of beautiful cakes for sale and raised £175 for church funds (slightly more than last year.) Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this excellent result.

Our Christmas party this year will be on the evening of Monday, 12 December at the Black Lion. This consists of 2-course meal, plus coffee, for a price of £11 (with £1 discount for MU members). As always, non-members will be very welcome.

Afternoon MU Group

The speakers at our October meeting were Richard Steer and Ian Williams from the Royal British Legion who gave a very enlightening and informative talk, which gave a good insight into the workings of the British Legion.

Our next meeting is on 21 November at 2.00 pm at the Town Hall when we will be having a talk by Mavis Griffiths.

The speaker at our October meeting was Estelle Parker who gave the second instalment of her fascinating talk on the history of St Mary's church and prominent local families.

The next meeting will be on Thursday, 17 November at 7.30 pm in St John's Room when Rose will be continuing her project on overseas branches.

Yours in love and fellowship.
