Views from the Vicarage - September 2014

Dear Friends,

This summer seems to have passed very quickly. Everything is now gearing up for the autumn, and there are many things I need to tell you about. First, Richard Assar has had to give up magazine distribution due to ill health; thanks to him for all he has done and hope his health improves. Very kindly Mary Goulbourne has taken on the job, if your magazine has not been delivered recently or you would like it to be, please do contact Mary who will sort it out. We are very keen that our wonderful church magazine should be read as widely as possible.

Secondly, Confirmation Classes will be starting at the end of the month for young people and adults. There is a Deanery Confirmation at S. Mary's on Sunday 14th December at 10.15am. If you or anyone you know would be interested in joining the classes then please contact me.

Thirdly, Monday 8th September is our Patronal Festival, the celebration of our Church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. There is a Sung Eucharist with a guest preacher at 7.30pm followed by refreshments ie wine and cheese etc.

Fourthly, the weekend of the 13/14th September is the Ellesmere Festival which coincides with the Churches Festival. Churches in the County will be open this weekend, including ours. On the Saturday 13th we have 'Last night at the Proms' at church which I hope will be a very enjoyable evening with the Oswestry Symphonia and the Ellesmere Choral Society. Proceeds will go to Age UK and S. Mary's Church. Tickets are available from Ann Harris or the Boat House. On the Sunday 14th is our popular Ecumenical Service at the Wharf (Market Hall if raining) at 10.15am and everyone is welcome to this Service.

Then in October we have our Harvest Supper on Friday 3rd October 7.30pm and a Service on Sunday 5th October giving thanks for Creation, including the Harvest but again like last year a Pet Service. Please bring your pets to church and have them blessed this year.

Our Sunday School resumes on Sunday 7th September at 10.15am and they are using an exciting new course. Please do encourage children to join our Sunday Club, they should enjoy it. And our Youth Group will be starting again 7.30pm Sunday 7th September. All Young People welcome.

Finance has been a problem for a while. We have not been paying our Parish Share in full for the second year, and are severely in arrears. And while many have been generous in helping to pay for the Bell Restoration, the giving to the church has gone down. We will be having a Stewardship Campaign this Autumn, hopefully to improve matters.

The Autumn Event this year will be on Saturday 18th October at the Town Hall.

Finally I am looking forward to the Mothers' Union Mystery Outing on Monday 15th September, leaving at 11 am, but they won't tell me where!!!

My prayers and best wishes,

Fr. Philip Edge - Vicar
