Views from the Vicarage - December 2018

Dear Friends,

In November we had a marvellous Remembrance Sunday Service marking the hundredth anniversary of the Armistice, the end of World War 1. So many uniformed organizations and cadets attended that the church was full.

At the end of last month, we also saw the Bishop of Lichfield confirm ten young people and adults at Ellesmere.

We start December with our Christmas Coffee Morning and Grand Draw on Saturday 1st Dec at 10.30am in the Town Hall.

Advent begins on Sunday 2nd Dec. A solemn season building up to Christmas. Liturgical Colour purple (penitence) no Flowers or Gloria.

We have Ellesmere School Carol Service on Monday 10th Dec at 6pm which I hope will be enjoyable and well attended. The children will be practicing all morning that day.

On the Third Sunday of Advent 16th December at 10.15am is our Christingle Service - Christlight - when we are all given oranges (the world) with candles in them (the light of Christ) and the red ribbon around it (the blood of Christ) and the sticks with fruits and sweets on them (the fruits of the earth). The collection this Sunday goes to the Children's Society.

We have the traditional Carol Service of Nine Lessons and Carols on the eve of Christmas Eve 6.30pm Saturday 23rd December. Then on Christmas Eve we have the popular Crib Service at 6pm, and the most important service of Christmas, Midnight Mass at 11.3Opm. And our usual services on Christmas Day.

The new boiler has been working very well so far this year and we have a warmer church, so I hope it is not too cold over Christmas.

Not everyone has cash these days to give at collections in church. We now have a Card Reader at the back of church so that you can give with a contactless card £5 (or £10 or £20). Please make use of this at our Christmas Services. We also hope as many people as possible will give to the church by Standing Order or Direct Debit. Forms are available at the back of church. Please talk to the Vicar or Church Wardens/Treasurer. We are £25,000 in arrears and we can't keep burying our heads in the sand. So please give generously to our church to keep our services and heating going!

We are starting a Youth Group in Ellesmere on Sunday 6th January meeting monthly. If you would like to join please let me know.

Wishing you a good Advent and a Merry Christmas.

My Prayers and best wishes,

Fr. Philip Edge - Vicar
