The spring is upon us. The snowdrops are out, so are the crocuses and the daffodils are nearly here. I think the dafs are out for S. David's day 1st March. The Diocesan slogan is 'following Christ in the footsteps of S. Chad'. We are each called to follow Christ and in this diocese of Lichfield we have the example of the first bishop of this diocese to follow. S. Chad became bishop of the kingdom of Mercia, a vast diocese taking in most of central England and Welsh borders. His day is the 2nd of March.
Tuesday 5th March is Pancake day or Shrove Tuesday, eating up all the goodies before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. There is a special Sung Eucharist with Ashing at 7pm that evening. As usual we are encouraged to give up things that are bad for us in Lent, but also do some positive things to grow our faith. We have Compline and Address each Wednesday on this year I am going to talk about modern day Saints and Martyrs. People like Oscar Romero of El Salvador, Jani Luwum of Uganda, Mother Theresa of Calcutta, Br Roger of Taize. These people have inspired the present generation of Christians, they excite holiness. Do join us if you can!
Very importantly this month we are renewing our Church Electoral Roll. This is done every six years. Everyone who belongs to our church is asked to fill in an Electoral Roll form and return it at the latest by Sunday 24th March. At the same time we are asking you to consider your giving. If you do not do so, please could you give to S. Mary's for the work of the church realistically and regularly by Standing Order? Our thanks for those who already do, but could you revise what you give and give a little more? Forms are available at the back of church and those on the old ER will have been sent a letter. Please return the forms to me or the ER officer Carole Stretton or the Treasurer Rodney Stokes.
The Annual Parochial Church Meeting is coming soon on Tuesday 9th April at 7.30pm. We will elect Church Wardens at the Vestry Meeting, then hear the running of the church and elect PCC members and then hear the report of the 'Friends of S. Mary's'. Please put this date in your diary. You need to be on the ER to come and vote!
We come towards the end of March with the Annunciation of our Lord to the Blessed Virgin Mary on Monday 25th March (Lady Day) with a Eucharist at 7pm. And finally on the last day 31st March (Fourth Sunday of Lent) is Mothering Sunday. Mothering Sunday Service with flowers for Mums and cards at our 10.15am Service. All welcome.
My Prayers and best wishes,
Fr. Philip Edge - Vicar
