Our Harvest Festival is on Sunday 1st October. Thinking of nature S. Francis has his feast day 4th October. S. Francis of Assisi (1181 - 1226) is surely one of the most attractive and best-loved of all the saints. But he began by being anything but a saint. Born the son of a wealthy cloth-merchant of Assisi, Francis' youth was spent in fast-living, parties and on fast horses as a leader of the young society of the town. Then he went to the war between Assisi and Perugia, and was taken prisoner for a year.

How time passes so quickly, especially as you get older! What happened to summer? One blink and it was over. Did I miss it? This coming September 13th is twenty-five years since I was made Vicar of Ellesmere. It seems like it was only yesterday. It has been wonderful to serve you and God here. I feel as young as when I first came.

4th June Whit Sunday - Pentecost Pentecost took place on the well-established Jewish festival of Firstfruits, which was observed at the beginning of the wheat harvest. It was exactly 50 days after the Passover, the time of Jesus' crucifixion.

1st May: May Day - unbridled merriment
May is the month when the ancient pagans used to get up to 'all sorts'! The Romans held their festival to honour the mother-goddess Maia, goddess of nature and growth. (May is named after her.) The early Celts celebrated-the feast of Beltane, in honour of the sun god, Beli. For centuries in Olde England' the people went mad in May.

The new Bishop of Lichfield the Rt Rev'd Dr Michael Ipgave has launched a new strap line for this Diocese of 'Come follow Christ in the footsteps of S. Chad.' This replaces 'Going for Growth' and the Bishop is launching his new direction of travel at a special celebration at Lichfield Cathedral on 20th May at 11am followed by a picnic lunch afterwards.
