In bygone centuries, Christians said their last farewells to the Christmas season on Candlemas, 2 February. This is exactly 40 days after Christmas Day itself.

Christmas is all but upon us and I wonder if you know the origins of some of our Christmas traditions? At a recent school assembly I learnt that almost every home had already the Christmas tree and decorations up. However, traditionally the tree and decorations should be from Christmas Eve to Epiphany (6th Jan), the twelve days of Christmas. On the continent the tree, or at least the crib with the wise men, are left up to Candlemas (2nd Feb).

Advent is a season of expectation and preparation, as the Church prepares to celebrate the coming (adventus) of Christ in his incarnation, and also looks ahead to his final advent as judge at the end of time. The readings and liturgies not only direct us towards Christ's birth, they also challenge the modern reluctance to confront the theme of divine judgement: 'Every eye shall now behold him robed in dreadful majesty.'(Charles Wesley)

The heating is now on. The weather is cold and wet. The hour has changed. What a huge contrast from the summer. I always feel a bit down at this time of year. I look forward to Christmas but it is still some time off. November has a sort of melancholy feel about it. It has recently been known in the Church as the Kingdom Season.
